Great picture profile for Sony A7sii

There are approximately 1 million picture profiles and creative styles you can use for filming with your cameras. If you don’t know picture profiles are basically the baked in look or style that your camera records video in. Obviously it’s way more complicated than that, but I don’t pretend to be a tech expert, I just copy experts from the internet. Let them spend hours reading white papers am I right? Anyway, in this post I will describe the one I use currently on my A7Sii. Please note that you should use whatever settings best solve your particular problems. First of all you should figure out what your needs actually are, then work back from that.

For example I shoot wedding videos all day in lots of different scenarios and all on the fly. I need the most reliable, neutral and easy setting that will work in all these situations and make the editing process as fast as possible too.

Therefore I want maximum dynamic range (so my blacks aren't too crushed and my interior windows aren't too blown out), a relatively flat/low contrast picture (so I have plenty of room to colour grade in post), but one that looks decent straight out of camera (so I have to only do the minimum in post).

Step 1 - First of all put your camera in movie mode (the little film strip icon on the mode select dial), and in the camera icon tab, scroll across to section 5, then scroll down to 'Picture Profile', and press ok.

Step 2 - Scroll down to PP8, press Right (the right side of the dial labeled 'ISO').

Step 3 - Scroll down to the bottom and choose Reset.

Step 4 - Select +32 in Saturation.

Step 5 - Change Gamma from S-log3 to Cine4.

Then make sure you do the following - press menu, then press OK, which is the little centre button of the dial. And you're done! You have a very flat image that looks ok straight out of the camera. And according to whoismattjohnson on youtube the Cine4 gamma is the latest and best colour science Sony have come up with so...there's that too!
